ORANGUTAN TOUR, CENTRAL KALIMANTAN (BORNEO)

In this so-called "magical trip", you will explore the quite and placid river on a traditional boat 3 x 10 meter wide (many past tourists of us call it "African Queen" river boat style) to visit the Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Borneo Province where you can trekking around in searching for orangutans as well as other endemic species of Kalimantan and other exotic fauna and flora. You will also watch the ex-captive orangutans re-introduced to their natural habitat. Many of the orangutans which have already successfully rehabilitated still come to the rehabilitation center at Camp Leakey station to visit the rangers and to interact with the new coming orangutans. Some times we can also encounter with the wild orangutans during easy trekking around the Camp Leakey which is also a research center area. In the afternoon, the boat will boating slowly on the quite river where you can take pictures of the other endemic monkeys of Kalimantan: Proboscis "pinnochio" Monkeys (nasalis larvatus), birds and other wildlife playing in the trees before they overnight along the riverside. For overnight, we will stay on traditional wooden boat for the whole night to make the cost more effective. Overnight on boat also provides us a better opportunity of sighting the crocodile, birds, monkeys and other animals at dusk or down at their night time resting place in the trees at the riverside. In the morning you will be waked up by the morning dew and ""the concert of tropical rain forest creatures". A healthy meals for dinner and Breakfast is prepared by our expert cooks on Indonesian cuisine. The boat is spacious 8 x 2.5 meters, which forms a roof and accommodates for 5 - 6 peoples. You can sleep on it or inside the boat separated with the guides and the boat crews. Clean mattresses, pillows, mosquito net and a simple toilet are available on board. Meanwhile, there is a riverside lodge across the river near Tanjung Harapan. This place allow you to have a nice sleep and good wash for the whole days. The river side has a very nice surrounding with the forest background, a lot of faunas to see and observe too. You will get additional charge based on the type of the accommodation you choose in the lodge if you decide to stay here. However, the room rates in the lodge is quite expensive. How to Get There The entry point of Tanjung Puting National Park is Pangkalan Bun, a town in Central Borneo. To reach Pangkalan Bun Airport, there is flight available from Jakarta or Bali and other major cities in Indonesia. To reach Pangkalan Bun from Bali, you need to take the flight to Jogyakarta, overnight and by the next day drive to Semarang Airport, 4 hours away from Jogyakarta. The transfers from Jogyakarta to Semarang on private air-conditioned vehicle can be arrange through us.

DAY 01: PANGKALAN BUN AIRPORT - KUMAI - TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport you will be picked up by our local staff and take you to Kumai to board on the boat. The boat is a traditional Klotok wooden river boat about 8m by 2.5m with a roof which forms the upper deck where you can view the rain forest as it glides by. The guide's team includes the boatman, a cook and expert guide. In the peaceful afternoon we will slowly explore the quite river by the klotok while observe the monkeys along the riverside. Dinner on the boat and overnight on the boat or lodge. While overnight on the boat we serve thin mattress, pillow, fine meals, bottled "mineral" water, mosquito net, kitchen, simple toilet available on boat besides the familiar - helpful guides and boatmen (D). DAY 02: ORANGUTAN EXPLORATION After breakfast board the klotok to travel up river for about 2 hours boating and then up a side creek to Camp Leakey where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rain forest. En route stop at Pondok Tanguy, the rehabilitation center for the new ex-captive orangutans. At Camp Leakey you will have opportunity to trek into the rain forest with your expert guide and the forestry rangers to appreciate the flora as well as perhaps sighting wild orangutans, gibbons, macaques, and birds. Lunch provided on boat. Afternoon visit the feeding station to see rehabilitate orangutans are given additional foods. DAY 01 : SEMARANG AIRPORT - PANGKALAN BUN - ORANG UTAN From Semarang airport catch your flight to Pangkalan Bun by Kalstar. Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun, you will be picked up by our local staff and take you to Kumai to board on the boat. The boat is a traditional Klotok wooden river boat about 2 x 10m with a roof which forms the upper deck where you can view the rain forest as it glides by. (D) DAY 02 : CAMP LEAKEY Here the playful and friendly baby orangutans are taught the first stages in fending themselves in the jungle. In the peaceful afternoon you have chance to explore to quite river by the klotok while observe the monkeys along the riverside. Dinner and overnight n the boat at river side 15 minutes down the river from the Camp Leakey. Overnight on the boat or in Rimba Lodge. (B,L,D) DAY 03 : CAMP LEAKEY FULL DAY After breakfast, we will be boating back to Camp Leakey to see deeper part of jungle of Borneo. Explore all day in Camp Leackey and see feeding time. Overnight on the boat or in Rimba Lodge. (B,L,D) DAY 04 : TANJUNG HARAPAN - CLINIC - PONDOK TANGGUI Breakfast on the boat and then another boating trip along the river in the swampy forest. In the afternoon, make a visit to the Orangutan clinic at Pasir Panjang. It is the centre for the Orangutan care before being released to the wilderness. Most of the orangutan here are orphan and familess one. They used to be kept as pets or confiscated from the illegal trader. Therefore the inspection and care are needed to make sure that they have no communicable disease or alike that they have from their old owner. Back to the hotel in Pangkalan Bun.
